Transvulcania adidas Terrex Half Marathon and Vertical Uphill Join the WMRA World Cup

This move is part of a mid-term strategy aimed at positioning the island to eventually bid for hosting a future World Championship.

Transvulcania adidas TERREX continues unveiling updates ahead of its sixteenth edition. After the event submitted its candidacy to the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA) several weeks ago to be included in the 2026 WMRA World Mountain Running Cup—specifically in the Long Distance and Classic Uphill categories—the Association’s Council confirmed this week that both races have been accepted, selecting them from a wide range of international events.

The designation marks a significant recognition of the organization’s work over recent years, as well as of the extraordinary terrain offered by La Palma, now a global benchmark in mountain trail running. Inclusion in the World Cup will attract some of the world’s top athletes and once again place the island in the spotlight of the trail-running scene. It is worth noting that the World Mountain Running Association, recognized by World Athletics—the global governing body for athletics—was also part of the organizing committee of last September’s World Mountain and Trail Running Championships held in Canfranc, in the Pyrenees.

With this announcement, Transvulcania adidas TERREX makes a decisive commitment to strengthen and elevate these two major races—until now overshadowed by the iconic Ultramarathon—reinforcing their identity within the international circuit and expanding their sporting, media and tourism impact. The organization stresses that it continues taking firm steps so that, in the medium term, the island may put forward a bid to host a World Championship.

Following the news, prospective participants in the WMRA World Cup are encouraged to register on the Half Marathon waiting list, as periodic call-ups will begin in the coming days after securing, in agreement with the Environmental Service, a slight increase in the number of slots for this category. The organization also reminds runners that direct registration for the Vertical Uphill race remains open.

Sergio Rodríguez, President of the Island Council of La Palma, emphasized that the institution remains committed to restoring and strengthening the momentum of the event. “This continues to be a priority,” he noted, adding that it is excellent news that Transvulcania has regained the support of the island’s public and, in a short period of time, is also recovering international recognition, reaffirming its status as a world-class event.

Transvulcania adidas TERREX is organized by the Island Council of La Palma through the public company SODEPAL, with the support of the Government of the Canary Islands through the Ministry of Tourism and Promotur under the brand “Islas Canarias Latitud de Vida,” as well as from adidas, Hotel H10 Taburiente Playa, Hotel La Palma Princess, Hotel Meliá La Palma, Fred. Olsen Express, Cicar, Spar La Palma, Coca-Cola, Libbys and Isola.
