In 2012, Transvulcania joined the International Skyrunning Federation (ISF) calendar. That made a group of top US athletes jump in a plane to an island they'd probably never heard of. Among them was a 21 year old from Wyoming nicknamed The Kid, which had blasted Lake Sonoma 50 miler record but who for many was most definitely not on the shortlist to win the race. And yet...
From the 1st to the 5th of April 2015, we held the second edition of our Training Camp. Conferences and indoor sessions took place at La Palma Teneguía Princess Hotel, whereas the outdoor trainings developed on the trails coded GR 131 (uphill) and PR LP 18 (downhill). Yeray Durán and Fernanda Maciel, from The North Face International, were the campus' flagship athletes.
Our team has put together four short video clips about the meeting [English subtitles available].
In Spanish ultrarunning, the Heras surname has a lot of weight. Miguel Heras is, for starters, one of the country's top runners and a two times winner of Transvulcania (in 2010 and 2011). Lesser known but almost on par are his brothers Javier (winner of Transvulcania Half Marathon in 2011) and Roberto (one of the best bikers Spain has ever produced). The three will converge on the same trail race for the first time ever. And that race will be the Plátano de Canarias Transvulcania Ultramaraton 2015.
According to a recent review of Transvulcania 2014, almost one fifth of the entrants of the last edition were not able to finish the 73 km Plátano de Canarias Transvulcania Ultramarathon. Officially speaking, they were labelled as DNF (Did Not Finish). The exact figure is 17%, which shrinks to 8,5% for the entrants of the 44 km Plátano de Canarias Transvulcania Marathon and to 5% for those of the 24 km Plátano de Canarias Transvulcania Half Marathon.
Linked to the event from day one, his unmistakable voice and contagious enthusiasm have turned him into an icon of Plátano de Canarias Transvulcania. Journalist, speaker and sports trainer, José Antonio de Pablo "Depa" has recently been selected as team official for the Spanish national team competing in the IAU World Trail Championship to be held in Annecy (France) in late May. In this rather juicy interview he dissects, counsels and comments on the next edition of the event.
An article brimming with useful nutrition and training tips for prospective runners of Plátano de Canarias Transvulcania, written by Aritz Urdmpilleta and Anna Sauló (nutritional researchers and consultants at Multipower SportFood and ElikaEsport, Nutrition, Innovation & Sport).
The North Face and Compressport, two leading brands of technical clothing, will participate in the Transvulcania Training Camp. Both will present their products and offer free goodies to the assistants.
It is a natural step in the relationship with our event, as they jointly sponsor Yeray Durán and Fernanda Maciel, the two leading teachers of the campus. The Camp will take place at the Teneguía Princess Hotel (Fuencaliente, La Palma), from the 1st to the 5th of April.
